When should I use this feature discoverability template?

You have a new feature but you’re unsure how it’s performing with your target audience. Are users discovering it easily? Are enough people using the feature compared to your predicted usage? Could it be easier to find within your product or app?

If you have at least one of these questions on your mind, this feature discoverability template is for you.

Tips to increase your feature discoverability

Want to increase your feature discovery? If the answer is no, this may not be the section for you. But if the answer is yes, here’s some quick tips to help get you started:

1. Avoid visual clutter. You might be familiar with the expression, “can’t see the forest for the trees.” This is essentially the problem you encounter when you give everything priority in your product app or webpage, and don’t let key features take center stage. Cut back on the visual noise and people will be more likely to scan your information easier, making discoverability more likely.

2. Limit options. Reducing anything might sound counterintuitive when you want people to expand their horizons and discover a new feature. But research shows that too many options can actually hinder a user’s decision-making. Strip choices back to the essentials and chances are, you’ll see more positive results.

**3. Provide visual cues. **An arrow can go a long way when it comes to nudging someone in the right direction. Add UI elements to help your users navigate to where you want them to. Just be sure that you keep them simple and don’t use too many at the one time (remember what we said about visual clutter?).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is discoverability in UX design?

Discoverability in UX design is the ease at which users can discover either new content or features within your product that they were previously unaware of.

What is feature discoverability?

Similar to feature findability, which sees users identifying and finding features they already know (or presume) exist within a product, feature discoverability relies on designers creating strong and highly intuitive digital experiences. Without this, discovering new features or content within products can be a challenge, which can be disastrous for both users trying to complete simple tasks, and product teams that see features performing poorly.
